Personnel Roles
Team personnel are divided into nine different roles: general manager, manager, bench coach, hitting coach, pitching coach, first base coach, third base coach, scouting director, and trainer. This screen gives some more detail about each of these roles.
General Manager
A general manager is responsible for running a baseball team, including all hiring and firing as well as all transaction decisions related to the team, including trades, drafts, free agent and waiver wire pickups, and so forth. Although it does not happen often in real life, in OOTP a general manager also often also acts as the manager of a club. In OOTP, general managers have a "Reputation" rating, and ratings for how they value different types of players, but they do not have explicit ratings in their ability as a general manager.
Manager
A manager is responsible for handling the execution of a game. Managers control lineups and depth charts, pitching rotations, and make all the in-game decisions, but they typically have no responsibility for hiring, firing, or other general management tasks. In OOTP, managers have a "Reputation" rating, and have a managerial "style," but they do not have explicit ratings in their ability as a manager.
Bench Coach
Bench coaches are responsible for helping the manager handle his responsibilities, especially during actual games. Bench coaches have some impact on all areas of play, including fielding. In OOTP, some tasks can be delegated to the bench coach if you serve as the manager. Like managers, bench coaches have a "Reputation" rating and a managerial style.
Hitting Coach
The hitting coach has a direct impact on the hitting performance of players on the team. A hitting coach's Teach Hitting rating affects the performance of players on the coach's team, as well as the development of players' hitting ratings towards their potential.
Pitching Coach
The pitching coach has a direct impact on the pitching performance of players on the team. A pitching coach's Teach Pitching rating affects the performance of players on the coach's team, as well as the development of players' hitting ratings towards their potential.
First Base Coach
The first base coach assists in decision-making for players stealing second base or advancing from first base, based on the coach's In-Game Running Coaching rating.
Third Base Coach
The first base coach assists in decision-making for players advancing from third base, based on the coach's In-Game Running Coaching rating.
Scouting Director
Scouting Directors are described in detail in the section of the online manual dedicated to scouting.
Team Trainer
Team trainers are responsible for the health of the team. Trainers have ratings in Fatigue Recovery, Injury Prevention (for Arms, Legs, Back and Other) and Injury Recovery (for the same four subcategories). See Injuries and Fatigue for more information about player injuries and fatigue.
Coaching roles
Coaches can be assigned to specific roles: Teach Catching, Teach Infielders, Teach Outfielders and Teach Running. Coaches can be assigned to more than one role, but coaches assigned to too many roles at once will be considered "overworked."
