Eventually, players will retire in OOTP. There is no preset age when this will happen, but it will always happen at the end of a season. Players who have suffered career-ending injuries will always retire at the end of a season. If a player retires while he is still under contract, the remaining term of the contract is voided, and the team no longer has to pay the player.
You will not receive any special notification when a player retires. However, the event will be noted in both the team and league transaction logs.
Players in OOTP will not come out of retirement to return to the list of active players. However, commissioners can manually force players to retire or unretire.
