The Development Lab is a new feature added to OOTP 25. It gives you extra controls over how your players will grow over time. You can assign specific programs to players during the off-season, in hopes of getting specific boosts in certain areas.
The Player '''Development Lab''' (Also known as '''Practice Facility''' in Historical Games). provides the ability to influence the development of a limited selection of players. Development programs can be assigned during the off-season with each program targeting a specific set of player skills

Find out more information about the lab [https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/showthread.php?t=353138 here], in the developer's guide to the program.

=== The Development Lab settings: ===
* '''Overall program Difficulty -''' adjust how difficult the development lab is.
** Setting that can be chosen are:
**# '''Less Difficult -''' Makes the programs slightly easier to complete. More positive outcomes.
**# '''Default -''' The default setting.
**# '''More Difficult -''' Makes the programs slightly harder to complete. Less positive outcomes.
* '''Program Improvement Magnitude -''' This setting adjusts the numerical outcome when you positively complete a program.
** Settings that can be chosen are:
**# '''Smaller -'''  This setting will make your bonus for completing programs slightly smaller. You will get less of an improvement.
**# '''Default -''' This is normal improvement.
**# '''Larger -''' This setting will make your bonus for completing programs slight larger. You will get more of an improvement.

* '''Disable player Development Lab''' - If you want to enable or disable the Development Lab in your game you just use this check box. Checked means it is disabled and unchecked means it is enabled.
==== Midterm Update Email ====
* '''Development Lab Size''' - This drop down box will allow you to change the slots available for your to use. It ranges from 1 to 20 slots. The Default is 6 slots. Click on the drop down box to see the options to choose from.

* '''Display Lab Specific Rating Changes in Completion Email''' - This setting will enable or disable the rating changes in the Development lab email. An examples of the information sent in the emails:
* GM's will now receive midterm update emails about players. On this date you can decide to remove players from their program. If you remove them while they are struggling, it will incur the same penalty as if they finished the program struggling. In all other cases you will simply free up the slot.

'''**NOTE**''' Depending on which rating scale you use will change the numbers you will see in the completion emails. If you use 1-100 the numbers will be larger than 5 scale. If you use 1-5, 2-8, 1-10, 1-20 the numbers seen in the completion email will be smaller than 5 scale.
=== Using the Development Lab ===
The Development Lab can be found from the Team Menu under Player Development.

This facility is open during the offseason and preseason, and includes weight rooms, batting cages, bullpens, training equipment, and more. While this facility is open you can send players here, where they will follow a training program designed to improve a specific part of their game.

Programs take different times to complete. You have Short programs: 4 to 5 weeks and long programs: 4 to 5 months. '''**NOTE**''' the length of your season will change these numbers. A shorter season will make the programs take longer (5 to 6 weeks or 5 to 6 months) and a longer season will makes these programs shorter. On a player you should be able to complete "3 short programs" or "1 long program and 1 short program" in an offseason.
Programs take different amounts of time to complete. There are short programs (4 to 5 weeks) and long programs (4 to 5 months).

====== '''Development Outcomes''' ======
The time allotted to the short and long program lengths will adjust to the amount of time between seasons (the offseason). A short schedule with more offseason time will increase program lengths (ex: 5 to 6 weeks or 5 to 6 months) and a long season with a shorter offseason will decrease program lengths. A player should be able to complete "3 short programs" or "1 long program and 1 short program" in an offseason.
Programs have four possible outcomes, '''Poor, No Improvement, Successful, and Outstanding'''. With an Outstanding outcome for some programs you will get a potential rating boost and with others you might get a bonus improvement.

Not all poor results will give a negative outcome but some will regress your ratings. Also, only what is seen in the Development Emails show what changed on your player. Looking at a scouting report shows ALL development from the last time your scout ran a report on that player. The Development Lab ONLY affects the stats from the program you ran and will not change other ratings. For example, if you did gap power, you will see in the dev lab email, any changes that the development lab had on your player. What you see in scouting reports, are not what changed because of the Development Lab.
==== Assigning a Player to a Development Program ====
To assign a player to a development program simply drag a player from the left side to the right side and select the program for the player. The available programs are listed below.

'''Notes'''

* Some programs may not always be available to all players. Ex: a player may already be at the maximum level and cannot improve further
* Injured players may not be able to participate in development programs.

==== Development Lab UI ====
With Development Lab 2.0 the UI has been updated to give you much more detail of how your players are progressing in their programs. There are different colors that represent how a player is progressing. NOTE: Just because a player is frustrated does not mean they will remain frustrated. As your player progresses through their program their potential outcome will fluctuate and can possibly pass the next threshold but, it can also regress to a lower possible outcome. Near the right side of the UI are 3 lines in the color of Orange, Green and Blue. Each of these line show the threshold of the next level of progression.

* '''Red -''' means a player is doing poorly in their program. If they remain poor there is a chance they may get a negative outcome.
* '''Orange -''' means the player is frustrated in their program.
* '''Green -''' means the player is on track to have a chance at a successful outcome.
* '''Blue -''' means that the player is excelling in their program and have a chance to have an outstanding outcome.

The dark bar is the possible outcome and will fluctuate up and down as your player progresses through their program. If that bar goes past one of the lines on the right, it will change color to that new level. The bright bar is your current progression. Once that bar goes past one of the lines on the right, that means that the player can no longer regress below that progression. So if it goes past the green line, that means it is guaranteed that your player will have a successful outcome.

==== '''Updated in OOTP 26 for Development Lab 2.0''' ====
The Improve Defense program has been adjusted in OOTP 26. You now have the choice of picking either Improve infield defense, improve defense at catcher  or improve outfield defense. Some players will only be able to pick one  of the programs and some players might be able to pick all three.

'''Q.''' How do I know if a player can train one of these programs and what prevents them from not being able to train in a program?

'''A.''' A player must have experience in at least one position in the infield to train infield defense, same with outfield and catcher. Now a player could have experience in playing catcher, 1B and LF and that player than could train all three of the defensive programs. Also you now can train all the programs in the off-season. You no longer have to pick or choose. If your player has the ability to play in the outfield and infield, they can do both defensive programs.

=== '''Common Programs:''' ===
==== '''Development Outcomes''' ====
*'''Improve Defense'''
Programs have four possible outcomes: '''Poor, No Improvement, Successful, and Outstanding'''.
**'''Pitcher''' - This program is considered EASY - On Successful or Outstanding completion this program will improve: Hold, infield arm, infield range, infield error, and turn double play
**'''Catcher''' - This program is considered HARD - On Successful or Outstanding completion this program will improve: Catcher Arm, Blocking, and Framing ratings.
**'''1B''' - This programs is considered Easy - On Successful or Outstanding completion this program will improve: infield arm, infield range, infield error, and turn double play
**'''2B and 3B''' - These programs are considered MEDIUM - On Successful or Outstanding completion this program will improve: infield arm, infield range, infield error, and turn double play
**'''SS''' - This program is considered HARD - On Successful or Outstanding completion this program will improve: infield arm, infield range, infield error, and turn double play
**'''LF and RF''' - These programs are considered EASY - On Successful or Outstanding completion this program will improve: outfield arm, outfield range, outfield error
**'''CF''' - This program is considered HARD - On Successful or Outstanding completion this program will improve: outfield arm, outfield range, outfield error
**'''Bunting Drills''' - This program is considered EASY and can be learned by all players, including pitchers. This will help improve Sacrifice Bunt and Bunt for Hit.
**'''Strength and Conditioning''' - This program is considered HARD - '''This program can be used by anyone that has over 20 proneness in all of the single 4 proneness ratings: Overall Proneness, Back Proneness, Legs Proneness, and Arm Proneness. If any of these fall below 20 (These can be found in the player editor), this program will not show up in the list of programs to use'''. Now this program will not let you know in specifics what has improved. It will just say that your proneness improves from "old durability" like Normal to "New Durability level" like Normal bordering on durable. It will not give numbers. If you have a pitcher that gets an Outstanding result will have a chance at a velocity boost. A batter that gets an Outstanding outcome will have a chance at a small potential power rating boost.

=== '''Pitcher Specific Programs:''' ===
* Poor results ''may'' produce a negative outcome (decrease in ratings) in some, but not all programs.
* No Improvement produces no change in rating(s)
* Successful results produce an increase in rating(s)
* Outstanding results produce an increase in potential rating(s) in addition to current rating(s) and can sometimes produce a bonus improvement.

* '''Secondary Pitch Improvement''' - This program is considered EASY  - On a successful program, this program will pick the pitchers highest rated secondary pitch (non-fastball) and slightly improve it. This program has the possibility to improve the Changeup, Circle Change, Curveball, Cutter, Forkball, Knuckle Curve, Knuckleball, Screwball, Sinker, Slider, and Splitter. This program has no effect on the Fastball.
On program completion the results for each player will be emailed to the general manager. These results may not be directly visible or obvious when viewing player ratings or scouting reports. Changes occur to internal ratings (available in the player editor). Depending on the rating scale in use they may not always result in a change to the displayed ratings. The scouting system will also impact the visibility of a ratings change.
* '''Improve Control''' - This program is considered MEDIUM - A '''successful''' program will improve the pitchers current control. If a players control is maxed it will not give an improvement. On an '''Outstanding''' program it will improve the current control and also the potential control of the pitcher. A '''poor''' program could regress the pitchers control.
* '''Increase Pitch Movement''' - This program is considered MEDIUM - This program acts the same way as the '''Improve Control program'''. A '''successful''' program will improve the pitchers current movement. If the pitchers movement is maxed it will not give an improvement. A '''Outstanding''' program it will improve the current movement and also the potential movement of the pitcher.
* '''Improve Pitch Arsenal''' - This program is considered HARD - This program will not be shown if all the pitchers pitches are 375 or over in both current and potential in the editor. This program will pick any pitch under the above requirement and improve it including the fastball. '''Once all pitches exceed 375, in editor ratings, this program will be removed from your Development Lab Program List'''.
* '''Increase Velocity''' - This program is considered HARD - As long as your Velocity is below 99-101 Mph, this program will show up on your Development Lab list. Once your Velo reaches 99-101 this program will be removed as a program you can use. The '''Strength and Conditioning''' Program can also give a Velo boost on a Outstanding program
* '''Endurance Training''' - This program is considered HARD - As long as your stamina is not maxed, this program will show up in your list to help improve your stamina.
* '''Add Pitch to Arsenal''' - This program is considered VERY HARD - On a successful program, this will add a random pitch not known to the pitcher already.
=== '''Batter Specific Programs:''' ===
* '''Baserunning Fundamentals''' - This program is considered VERY EASY - A successful or Outstanding Program will improve the players baserunning abilities.
* '''Base-stealing Technique''' - This program is considered VERY EASY - A successful or Outstanding Program will improve the players stealing aggressiveness and Stealing Ability.,
* '''Running Mechanics''' - This program is considered MEDIUM - A successful or Outstanding Program will improve the players speed.
* '''Plate Discipline''' - This program is considered MEDIUM - A '''successful''' program will improve the batters current Eye. If a batter's Eye is maxed it will not give an improvement. On an '''Outstanding''' program it will improve the current Eye and also the potential Eye of the batter.
* '''Gap Power''' - This program is considered MEDIUM - A '''successful''' program will improve the batters current Gap Power. If a batter's Gap Power is maxed it will not give an improvement. On an '''Outstanding''' program it will improve the current Gap Power and also the potential Gap Power of the batter.
* '''Quality of Contact''' - This program is considered HARD - A '''successful''' program will improve the batters current BAPIP. If a batter's BABIP is maxed it will not give an improvement. On an '''Outstanding''' program it will improve the current BABIP and also the potential BABIP of the batter.
* '''Two-strike Approach''' - This program is considered HARD - A '''successful''' program will improve the batters current Avoid K's. If a batter's Avoid K's is maxed it will not give an improvement. On an '''Outstanding''' program it will improve the current Avoid K's and also the potential Avoid K's of the batter.
* '''Generate Batspeed''' - This program is considered HARD - A '''successful''' program will improve the batters current Power. If a batter's Power is maxed it will not give an improvement. On an '''Outstanding''' program it will improve the current Power and also the potential Power of the batter.

The Player Development Lab (Also known as Practice Facility in Historical Games). provides the ability to influence the development of a limited selection of players. Development programs can be assigned during the off-season with each program targeting a specific set of player skills

Find out more information about the lab here, in the developer's guide to the program. (Also check out Player Development Sliders)

      2. Default - This is normal improvement.
      3. Larger - This setting will make your bonus for completing programs slight larger. You will get more of an improvement.

Midterm Update Email

  • GM's will now receive midterm update emails about players. On this date you can decide to remove players from their program. If you remove them while they are struggling, it will incur the same penalty as if they finished the program struggling. In all other cases you will simply free up the slot.

Using the Development Lab

The Development Lab can be found from the Team Menu under Player Development.

The development lab facility is open during the offseason and preseason, and includes weight rooms, batting cages, bullpens, training equipment, and more. While this facility is open you can send players here, where they will follow a training program designed to improve a specific part of their game.

Programs take different amounts of time to complete. There are short programs (4 to 5 weeks) and long programs (4 to 5 months).

Assigning a Player to a Development Program

To assign a player to a development program simply drag a player from the left side to the right side and select the program for the player. The available programs are listed below.

Notes

  • Some programs may not always be available to all players. Ex: a player may already be at the maximum level and cannot improve further
  • Injured players may not be able to participate in development programs.

Development Lab UI

With Development Lab 2.0 the UI has been updated to give you much more detail of how your players are progressing in their programs. There are different colors that represent how a player is progressing. NOTE: Just because a player is frustrated does not mean they will remain frustrated. As your player progresses through their program their potential outcome will fluctuate and can possibly pass the next threshold but, it can also regress to a lower possible outcome. Near the right side of the UI are 3 lines in the color of Orange, Green and Blue. Each of these line show the threshold of the next level of progression.

  • Red - means a player is doing poorly in their program. If they remain poor there is a chance they may get a negative outcome.
  • Orange - means the player is frustrated in their program.
  • Green - means the player is on track to have a chance at a successful outcome.
  • Blue - means that the player is excelling in their program and have a chance to have an outstanding outcome.

List of Development Programs

Development programs are split between common programs, pitcher specific programs, and batter specific programs. Programs have varying difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, Hard, and Very Hard). The difficulty impacts program length and likelihood of success.

Common Programs:

Common programs are available to both pitchers and position players.

Updated in OOTP 26 for Development Lab 2.0

The Improve Defense program has been adjusted in OOTP 26. You now have the choice of picking either Improve infield defense, improve defense at catcher or improve outfield defense. Some players will only be able to pick one of the programs and some players might be able to pick all three.

Q. How do I know if a player can train one of these programs and what prevents them from not being able to train in a program?

A. A player must have experience in at least one position in the infield to train infield defense, same with outfield and catcher. Now a player could have experience in playing catcher, 1B and LF and that player than could train all three of the defensive programs. Also you now can train all the programs in the off-season. You no longer have to pick or choose. If your player has the ability to play in the outfield and infield, they can do both defensive programs.

Development Outcomes

Programs have four possible outcomes: Poor, No Improvement, Successful, and Outstanding.

  • Poor results may produce a negative outcome (decrease in ratings) in some, but not all programs.
  • No Improvement produces no change in rating(s)
  • Successful results produce an increase in rating(s)
  • Outstanding results produce an increase in potential rating(s) in addition to current rating(s) and can sometimes produce a bonus improvement.

Tips and Tricks

Having coaches with good development traits, players with positive personalities and good morale could possibly give a slight bonus at getting better outcomes. Making sure your development budget has enough money can also help with the development lab outcome.
