The default 3D ballparks can be modified to adjust advertisements, team logos, grass textures and more. This is done by editing the image files containing the textures used by the 3D model.

Editing Texture Files
Prior to OOTP version 25.80 the texture files were simple webp files easily editable in Photoshop or Gimp. The texture files are now located in a ktx container and require a 3rd party editor called PVRTexTool to access. Fortunately webp files can still be used in place of the ktx files, simply replace the ktx file with a webp file of the same name.

The textures can be edited in any graphic editor such as Photoshop or Gimp.

What can be modified?
Most textures seen in game (and even lighting and shadows) can be found somewhere in the texture files of a ballpark. Figuring out what does what is a matter of trial and error. Changes can be as simple as overwriting an advertisement with a new one, or as complicated as replacing the entire city skyline in the outfield background. The most common mods are to the stadium advertisements (replacing fictional ads with their real life counterparts) and to the on field grass textures (altering mow patterns and field logos). While far less common it's also possible to completely modify a ballpark's textures to match that of a fictional team.

Modifying and Testing in Game
The 3D ballparks are located in the customizable data folder under /ballparks/models folder

* Choose the park to be modified
* Make a copy of the folder giving it a unique name
* Load the file to be modified in an editor
* Make changes and save the file as a webp file
* Test the changes in game using the edit ballpark screen.
* Repeat as needed

File Descriptions and Explanations
Each texture file exists as a Day version and a Night version. The day version files are used during daytime, while the night versions are used during dusk and nighttime. The following table list each filename without Day/Night duplication.

Ktulu: added link

All player names in OOTP can be found in the names.xml file located in the database folder of the customizable data folder. This is a large file containing over 250,000 lines consisting of First Names (30,000+), Last Names (220,000+) and Nicknames (4000+). As with the world database file (world_default.xml) the use of an advanced text editor is highly recommended.

File Structure
The names.xml has three sections for each name type.

<FIRST_NAMES> </FIRST_NAMES>

<LAST_NAMES> </LAST_NAMES>

<NICK_NAMES> </NICK_NAMES>

All three sections use the same format for each name and each name is on a single line. Here is an expanded example:

<N nid="121664">

<EN>Markus</EN>

<ES>Markus</ES>

<KR>마커스</KR>

<JP>マーカス</JP>

<CN>馬庫斯</CN>

<NL>

<L lid="0" dist="2"/>

<L lid="6" dist="1"/>

<L lid="7" dist="1"/>

<L lid="10" dist="6"/>

<L lid="11" dist="1"/>

<L lid="12" dist="1"/>

<L lid="32" dist="1"/>

<L lid="39" dist="1"/>

</NL>

</N>

The first line <N> contains a unique name ID (nid). The name ids do not need to be in a sequential order, they just need to be unique.

The second section contains the name and language localization versions of the name. The default name is within the English <EN> tags.

The next section is the Names List section and this is where the name is associated with the Ethnicity IDs in the world_default.xml file. In the example the first "Language ID" lid is "0", this corresponds with the Ethnicity ID of 0 which is "U.S. (Modern)". The second is "6" which corresponds with "Dutch".

"dist" is used to set how frequently the name will appear in that specific Languague ID "lid". As with the world_default.xml file this number is not a set percentage, it is a relative value. As an example the name "Smith" has a distribution value of "34859" in the U.S. Modern lid, whereas "Smithers" has a distribution value of "54"

Player Name Selection
When the game creates a player it will first generate the country of origin (Nation id) based on the league settings and the type of player being created. Within that Nation the game will check the distribution of the Ethnicity IDs and select one. The game will then "randomly" select a name matching that ethnicity from the names file with the likelihood of selection based off of the distribution weights.

Importing the names.xml File
New Game
Option 1: Overwrite the names.xml file in the \data\database folder (make a backup of the original file)

Option 2: OOTP provides a method to use custom files without the need to overwrite the default files in the database folder. To do this create a New Custom Game from the main screen and enter Advanced Mode by clicking the button at the bottom of the League Creation Wizard. Click on the Advanced tab at the top. Under Source Database Settings you can now select any custom database files you wish to use in your new custom game, if a file is missing OOTP will use the default file(s).

Note: Whenever a game patch is installed the default files in the database folder will be overwritten so be sure to keep a separate copy of your custom file.

Existing Games
The names.xml file can be imported in to an existing game from the Game Settings section. From the Game menu go to Game Settings and navigate to the Database tab. In the top right click the Database Tools drop down and select Re-import name & ethnicity database. It is recommended to backup your league file before re-importing the edited data.

Tips for Editing the names.xml File
If you just want to add a few names into your game they can simply be added to the file in the appropriate section. Just make sure to use a unique Name ID number.

However, If you are working with larger amounts of data it is best to use spreadsheets to edit and manipulate your data.

Unlike the world_default.xml file the names file is a bit more complicated due to the way Language IDs are linked to names. It's more difficult to organize namesets based on ethinicities.

One option, and the simplest, is to not worry about duplicate name entries and simply have an individual spreadsheet sheet for each ethnicity. Just make sure that each name still has a unique ID.

Another option is to take everything from option one, combine it into one sheet, sort by name and then manually merge each individual lid name into one name with multiple lid and dist

As with the the world_default.xml file, xml tags can be inserted into spreadsheet columns to build the individual xml lines. See world_default.xml Advanced Editing Tips

Ktulu:

OOTP comes with a world database that includes over 80,000 cities and all the nations in the world today. But, perhaps you don't want to use the real world for your baseball universe. Perhaps you want to add new cities or play in an entirely fictional universe. Luckily, most of the world database is customizable!

The OOTP world database is contained in the world_default.xml file located in the database folder of the customizable data folder. Any time a new game is created OOTP will use this file to generate the baseball world.

world_default.xml
The world_default.xml file can be edited in any text editing program(notepad), but using a more advanced text editor with color coding, line numbers and other quality of life options is highly recommended (ex: notepad++). Before editing the file make a backup of the original or work on a copy.

Basic Structure
World

* Ethnicities
* Continents
** Nations
*** Nation
**** State
***** Cities
* Regions

Ethnicities
OOTP primarily uses "ethnicities" to generate Facegen images of players. They are also used in conjunction with the names.xml file to generate appropriate player names. Nations can have multiple "ethnicites" and each one can be distributed or weighted independently. Names can also be used for multiple "ethnicites" and their frequency can be set for each ethnicity independently.

By default OOTP comes with 40 ethnicities with various distributions of face types for each. You can create your own by editing and existing entry or by adding to the list.

Example:

<code><ETHNICITY id="0" name="U.S. (Modern)" name_korean="미국(현대)" african="0" asian="0" east_indian="0" caucasian="1000" hispanic="0" /></code>

<code><ETHNICITY id="1" name="Hispanic" name_korean="히스패닉" african="300" asian="0" east_indian="0" caucasian="50" hispanic="650" /></code>

The first entry is for "U.S. (Modern)" and will create 100% caucasian facegens. The distribution is set using a scale of 0 to 1000. The second entry is for "Hispanic" and has a different distribution of facegen types. It's important to note that these distributions are used solely for the face types created by facegen.

As shown later, each ethnicity can be used within a Nation along with a distribution percentage. Each name in the names database can also be linked to multiple ethnicities with different distribution percentages.

Continents
The continents section is only used for organizational and display purposes.

Nations
Each Nation has a unique ID and several attributes . Here is an example of the Nation entry for Canada

<code><NATION id="36" name="Canada" name_korean="캐나다" short_korean="캐나다" pop="35151728" etid="32" capid="57981" gender="0" bbqual="5" abbr="CAN" abbr_korean="CAN" dem="Canadian" dem_korean="캐나다인" time_zone="-5"></code>

* id: unique ID number
* name: The name of the country
* name/short_korean: Used for the Korean localization
* pop: the population of the country
* etid: the primary ethinicity of the country. (Only used as a fallback if the ethnicities aren't set at a lower level?)
* capid: the id number of the country's capital city
* gender: ?
* bbqual: the baseball quality of the nation on a scale of 1-5. see Baseball Quality
* abbr & abbr_korean: Country abbreviation. This abbreviation is used to load the Nation Flag of the same name. ex: CAN = can.png
* dem & dem_korean: used by OOTP's text engine
* time_zone: the primary time zone if not set at a lower level (state or city)

Within each <Nation> are two primary sections and an optional third.

<SECOND_NATIONS>
This section is optional and is used in the player selection process for international tournaments?.

<ETHN_PCTS>
This is where the distribution of ethnicities is set. Again using Canada as an example:

<code><ETHN_PCTS></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="8" pct="5" /></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="32" pct="95" /></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="39" pct="5" /></code>

<code></ETHN_PCTS></code>

* etid: the ethnicity ID as defined in the <ETHNICITIES> section
* pct: the relative usage of the ethnicity. Note: while most entries are defined as an even share of 100% this is not a requirement.

In this example the vast majority of players will use ethinicity # 32 "Canadian", while a smaller percentage will use #8 "French" and #39 "U.S. (African-American)"

<STATES>
This section is where each State/Province is defined.

<code><STATE id="678" name="Ontario" name_korean="온타리오" pop="13448494" abbr="ON" abbr_korean="ON" time_zone="-5" observes_dst="1"></code>

* id: unique ID number
* name: state/province name
* pop: population
* abbr: abbreviation
* time_zone: time zone. Used if time zone is not set at the City level
* observes_dst: sets whether day light savings time is observed. 1 = "Yes" 0 = "No". Used if time zone is not set at the City level

<CITIES>
This section is where each city is defined

<code><CITY id="57981" name="Ottawa" name_korean="오타와" pop="812129" lat="45.42000" long="-75.71000" abbr="OTT" abbr_korean="OTT" /></code>

* id: unique ID number
* name/name_korean: City name/Korean localization
* pop: city population (Can be used on inaugural draft screen to set team market size)
* lat and long: Latitude and Longitude of the city. (Used in determining "close to home" calculations?)
* abbr: city abbreviation. Used for team abbreviations when generating teams.
* time_zone: (Optional - use if different than State) time zone of the city
* observes_dst: (Optional - use if different than State) sets whether daylight savings time is observed

* altitude: (Optional) a value of 0-6. If not set the default is set to 0 (sea level?) with 1-6 being relative altitude. Used for park factors in generated ballparks?

<REGIONS>
Regions are used to group States or Nations together. Regions can be used to setup leagues and tournaments and can also be used to limit foreign player usage and to limit teams to specific draft regions.

Regions can be organized as a group of States or as a group of Nations. There are also a group of auto-generated regions (hardcoded?) that are based on the baseball quality of all nations.

<code><REGION id="36" sort_order="1020" name="AMERICAS: USA / Canada / Mexico" name_korean="아메리카: 미국/캐나다/멕시코"></code>
<code>       <REGION_NATION id="36" /></code>

* id: unique Region ID
* sort_order: Used to determine order in the selection menu (Clarification Needed)
* name: Name to describe the region.

In the above example the Nation ids of Canada, Mexico and the USA are used.

Advanced Editing Tips
Manually editing the xml file can be very tedious, but it can be made easier by first manipulating the data in a spreadsheet and then inserting that data back into the xml. One method is to insert the xml tags between the finished columns of data. As an example here what a spreadsheet of city data would look like with xml tags inserted between the spreadsheet data (Using the previous example of Ottawa without the Korean localization fields):
+Example of City Data with XML Tags Inserted

ID

Name

Pop

LAT

LONG

ABBR

<CITY id="
57981
" name="
<code>Ottawa</code>
" pop="
812129
" lat="
45.42
" long="
-75.71
"abbr="
OTT
" />
Once completed you can copy and paste the city entries in the appropriate <CITIES> </CITIES> section.

Fixing Errors
If you make a mistake in your xml file OOTP will generate an error message when it can't parse the xml file. This error message will include a line number which can be used to find the approximate location of the mistake. This is one reason why an advanced text editor is recommended. Most errors will be from missing quotation marks, missing closing tags ( />) and mismatching section pairs (<STATE> without a closing </STATE>).

Using a Custom File for a New Game
OOTP provides a method to use custom files without the need to overwrite the default files in the database folder.

Importing an Edited File for an Existing Game
The world_default.xml file can be imported to an existing game from the Game Settings section. From the Game menu go to Game Settings and navigate to the Database tab. In the top right click the Database Tools drop down and select Re-import world database from XML file. It is recommended to backup your league file before re-importing the edited data.

Nation Flags
OOTP does not support a custom path for Nation Flags. All nation flags must be placed in the data/database/nation_flags folder and the file name must match the country abbreviation in the world_default.xml file. Files need to be in png format and the default flag size is 70px by 40px (Width x Height).

Example:

<NATION id="124" name="Mexico" name_korean="멕시코" short_korean="멕시코" pop="107550697" etid="1" capid="49935" gender="0" bbqual="5" abbr="MEX" abbr_korean="MEX" dem="Mexican" dem_korean="멕시코인" time_zone="-7" observes_dst="1">

The country abbreviation is "MEX" so the flag file is mex.png

This is all out of date.

<s>OOTP's world database is actually nothing more than two text files: nations.txt and cities.txt. These are located in the datadatabase directory in your OOTP installation directory. The nations.txt and cities.txt files are used in a number of scenarios in the game:</s>

* <s>In determining the nation for each league in your universe</s>
* <s>In determining team cities based on the league nation</s>
* <s>In determining player and coach origins and names</s>
* <s>In making decisions about whether a player wants to sign a contract, based on the distance between the team's location and the player's originThe nations.txt and cities.txt files are comma-separated text files. If you're not familiar with those, see this screenabout comma-separated files. In particular, if you're looking to edit the cities.txt file with Microsoft Excel, see this section of the page.</s>

<s>The world database is used for all leagues in a given saved game. There is no way, for example, to use one set of nations and cities for "League A" in your saved game, and a different set for "League B" in your saved game.</s>

<s>Read the following sections for more information:</s>

* <s>The nations.txt File</s>
* <s>The cities.txt File</s>
* <s>Putting Nations and Cities Together</s>
* <s>Hands-on: Nations</s>
* <s>Hands-on: Cities</s>

OOTP Skin Files
OOTP "skin files" contain all the files and information used to create the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of OOTP. They contain various images and configuration files which essentially make up the visual components of the GUI. OOTP comes with three skins. OOTP Dark (default), OOTP Light and OOTP Classic.

Downloading the Skin Files
Before editing a Skin, the files which make up the skin must first be downloaded from the workshop.The Steam version of the game uses the Steam Workshop while the standalone (Fastspring) version of the game uses Add-ons Central

Steam Workshop - Steam Version
The Steam Workshop can be reached directly via the Steam app from the top menu on the OOTP game page, or from within the game under File>Workshop>Open Workshop button, or from the link at the bottom of the OOTP start screen.

# Subscribe to the Mod on the Steam Workshop page by clicking the subscribe button (Steam will automatically download the file)
# Open Workshop Central from the File menu in OOTP
# The file should be listed in Your Subscribed Items. It now must be installed.
# Select the item and on the right hand side click the button: "This item is downloaded, click here to install or re-install it"

Add-Ons Central - Standalone Version
Information needed.

Editing the Skin Files
Once downloaded and installed the skin files are located in the customizable data folder under \data\skins.

Editing the skin files is primarily a process of trial and error. There is no official documentation. At the simplest level images that are easily recognizable in game can be found and modified. Things get more complicated when delving into the myriad of text configuration files.

* The first step in editing a skin is to decide which skin to use as the base to work off. It's best to make a copy of the entire skin folder so that the original is preserved. Select the skin folder (ex: ootp dark) and make a copy within the root Skins folder. Ex: skins/My Skin - ootp dark

* The next step is to begin making changes by editing or replacing existing files. The text files can be viewed and edited in Notepad or any text editor (make sure to save as plain text if using a more advanced editor).

* Once changes are made the Skin must be "rebuilt" before it will load within the game. To do this simply delete the skin.bin file located in the root folder of the skin.

Loading the Skin in Game
To load the edited skin go to the main Settings page. On the Interface tab the first drop down changes the skin. Select a skin and click the Ok button. It will take some time for the game to "rebuild" the skin.bin file. Once loaded the interface can be explored to check the changes that were made.

To make further changes the process of editing and deleting the skin.bin file is repeated. To rebuild the skin again the game must be exited and restarted. Switching to another skin and then switching back to the edited skin will also rebuild the skin.bin file without the need to exit the game.

Skin Knowledge Base
See the Skin Knowledge Base for tips, how to's and information on what certain files do.

Important! Customizing OOTP often involves modifying important files so there is some degree of risk involved. Some mods may permanently affect existing games and leagues while others may be a hassle to revert. Some have the potential to prevent new games from being created properly, or even at all. To avoid undesirable results, backup your league files before installing any mods with the potential to significantly alter your game. Example: Installing some team logos may be easy to revert. Overwriting the facegen or player picture files of every player in a league may not be reversible.

Most non-league specific mods can be reverted by re-installing the game, but for simplicity's sake it's easier to make a copy of any files being modded.

It is also recommended to keep a separate copy of modded files outside of the OOTP directory. This is because some of the default files (such as the world database) may be overwritten when game patches are installed.

The default 3D ballparks can be modified to

File Descriptions and Explanations
Each texture file exists as a Day version and a Night version. The day version files are used during daytime, while the night versions are used during dusk and nighttime. The following table list each filename without Day/Night duplication.
Important! Customizing OOTP often involves modifying important files so there is some degree of risk involved. Some mods may permanently affect existing games and leagues while others may just be a hassle to revert.

# Select the item and on the right hand side click the button: "This item is downloaded, click here to install or re-install it"
Add-Ons Central - Standalone Version
Information needed.

Editing the Skin Files
Once downloaded and installed the skin files are located in the /data/skins/ folder. This folder can be found by clicking "Open folder containing customizable data" in Settings.

So, what does 'customizing' mean? Well, there are lots of ways you can adjust OOTP to your liking that have been covered elsewhere - using the in-game editors or commissioner functions, for example. In this section of the manual, we're going to define 'customizations' as changes to OOTP made outside of the game. So, for example, modifying the text files that control random player name generation is a customization. Changing your game's league settings is not. Got it?

Important! Customizing your game often involves modifying the files that are installed with the game, so there is some degree of risk involved. The best protection against problems is to back up, back up, back up! If you're modifying something related to one specific league, you can back up that league using the in-game backup options. If you're modifying the skin, graphics, or individual text files, you should back up those individual files or folders before modifying them. On top of that, customization often involves a decent amount of trial and error. It's much easier to restore a single backed up file than having to reinstall the game from scratch! There's no measuring the amount of frustration a good backup can save!

Once downloaded and installed the skin files are located in the /data/skins/ folder. This folder can be found by clicking "Open folder containing customizable data" in Settings.

One of the hallmarks of the Out of the Park Baseball series is the ability to customize nearly any aspect of the game. OOTP players can import custom roster sets, modify the logos used in-game, customize ballparks, and more! Please check out the OOTP Forums OOTP Mods section for community created mods.

Ktulu: /* <CITIES> */  added link

OOTP comes with a world database that includes over 80,000 cities and all the nations in the world today. But, perhaps you don't want to use the real world for your baseball universe. Perhaps you want to add new cities or play in an entirely fictional universe. Luckily, most of the world database is customizable!

The OOTP world database is contained in the world_default.xml file located in the data/database folder.

World

* Ethnicities
* Continents
** Nations
*** Nation
**** State
***** Cities
* Regions

* id: unique ID number
* name: The name of the country
* name/short_korean: Used for the Korean localization
* pop: the population of the country
* etid: the primary ethinicity of the country. (Only used as a fallback if the ethnicities aren't set at a lower level?)
* capid: the id number of the country's capital city
* gender: ?
* bbqual: the baseball quality of the nation on a scale of 1-5. see Baseball Quality
* abbr & abbr_korean: Country abbreviation. This abbreviation is used to load the Nation Flag of the same name. ex: CAN = can.png
* dem & dem_korean: used by OOTP's text engine
* time_zone: the primary time zone if not set at a lower level (state or city)

Within each <Nation> are two primary sections and an optional third.

<SECOND_NATIONS>
This section is optional and is used in the player selection process for international tournaments?.

<ETHN_PCTS>
This is where the distribution of ethnicities is set. Again using Canada as an example:

<code><ETHN_PCTS></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="8" pct="5" /></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="32" pct="95" /></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="39" pct="5" /></code>

<code></ETHN_PCTS></code>

* etid: the ethnicity ID as defined in the <ETHNICITIES> section
* pct: the relative usage of the ethnicity. Note: while most entries are defined as an even share of 100% this is not a requirement.

In this example the vast majority of players will use ethinicity # 32 "Canadian", while a smaller percentage will use #8 "French" and #39 "U.S. (African-American)"

<STATES>
This section is where each State/Province is defined.

<code><STATE id="678" name="Ontario" name_korean="온타리오" pop="13448494" abbr="ON" abbr_korean="ON" time_zone="-5" observes_dst="1"></code>

* id: unique ID number
* name: state/province name
* pop: population
* abbr: abbreviation
* time_zone: time zone. Used if time zone is not set at the City level
* observes_dst: sets whether day light savings time is observed. 1 = "Yes" 0 = "No". Used if time zone is not set at the City level

<CITIES>
This section is where each city is defined

<code><CITY id="57981" name="Ottawa" name_korean="오타와" pop="812129" lat="45.42000" long="-75.71000" abbr="OTT" abbr_korean="OTT" /></code>

* id: unique ID number
* name/name_korean: City name/Korean localization

<REGIONS>

" pop="
812129
"abbr="
OTT

Example:

<NATION id="124" name="Mexico" name_korean="멕시코" short_korean="멕시코" pop="107550697" etid="1" capid="49935" gender="0" bbqual="5" abbr="MEX" abbr_korean="MEX" dem="Mexican" dem_korean="멕시코인" time_zone="-7" observes_dst="1">

* <s>The nations.txt File</s>
* <s>The cities.txt File</s>
* <s>Putting Nations and Cities Together</s>
* <s>Hands-on: Nations</s>
* <s>Hands-on: Cities</s>

Inaugural drafts (sometimes called "fantasy drafts") are one-time events in a league. In a league with an inaugural draft, all teams begin play with no players on their rosters at any level, and play begins with a draft of enough players to populate rosters at all levels for each team.

This screen consists of the following sections:
Note: The above links will not work within the in-game help. However, they all simply link to sections lower in this page, so if you are reading this in-game, just scroll down to find the appropriate section!

Configuring Inaugural Drafts
At the time of a league's creation, you can define whether or not an inaugural draft will be held in the Options page. If no draft is held at the time the game is created, the computer will randomly populate all teams' rosters, and play will begin. If, for some reason, you wish to set up an inaugural draft after the initial creation of the league (for example, if you made a mistake during the game creation), there is still hope. OOTP has a League Function that allows you to release all players and schedule a new inaugural draft.

Note: It is possible to have multiple leagues, some of which have inaugural drafts and some of which do not.

Inaugural Draft Overview
When a game begins with an inaugural draft, all players are automatically entered into the inaugural draft pool, and are visible on the Draft Pool page. The Draft Poos screen is available either in the League Menu or in the Transactions area. There will also be a link on the Manager Home page. The game will automatically bring you to the Draft Order and Rules page. You can safely navigate through the game and still come back to the draft screens through the Inaugural Draft link in the League Menu, but you will not be able to advance the date in the game until you deal with the draft.

Number of Rounds in an Inaugural Draft
In an inaugural draft, teams select players until all team rosters have been filled. When determining the precise number of rounds in the inaugural draft, the game first looks at the number of affiliations within the league. For example, if you have the standard five levels of minors, then each major league team has five affiliated teams. The game takes the number of affiliations, plus one for the major league team, and multiplies this by the active roster limit. So, for the example above, you would get:
(5+1) x 25 = 6 x 25 = 150 rounds in the inaugural draft
However, when determining the number of rounds, it actually uses the greatest number of affiliations of any single team in the league. So, let's say your setup has one team that has six minor league teams, while all other teams have five. In that case, the equation would be:
(6+1) x 25 = 7 x 25 = 175 rounds in the inaugural draft
In this case, only the team that has six affiliations would select during those last 25 rounds, since all the other teams would have filled their rosters by the time round 151 was reached.

Inaugural Draft Budgets
By default in OOTP, when you have an inaugural draft, all players are given automatically contracts. The majority of the starting contracts will be for one or two years, although some might be longer. To calculate initial contracts, the league calculates the average player quality at each position. Then it compares each player to that baseline, and based on the difference assigns a contract that is based on the salary steps (above average, good, star, and so on) in the league financial rules. Also factored in are service time (which is generated randomly), age, and a certain amount of randomness. Arbitration-eligible players get less money, and players who are eligible for the league minimum get that amount. Due to the flexibility of the financial model, however, player contracts might be structured differently from what is written here, depending on which financial options are enabled.
Additionally, OOTP also enables you to more precisely define how contracts are handled by enabling you to draft with a fixed budget. This value can be set on the Draft Rules page. If you choose to draft with a fixed budget, additional following options appear.
When using a fixed budget, players in the draft will each have salary demands. You cannot draft players whose combined demands exceed the team draft budget. After the draft, each team's financials will be adjusted using the draft budget as the base.
To draft with a fixed budget, you define an overall team draft budget. This budget applies to each team in the league, by default. However, you can also manually adjust each team's budget by editing the values on-screen. You can also have OOTP recalculate the budgets according to the population of the cities that host the teams by clicking the Adjust Budgets using City Population button. In this case, teams from larger cities will have larger budgets.

TIP: Adjust Budgets Using City Population will also adjust the market size of each team and base it off the city population.

If you adjusted any league financial settings after the creation of the league, you should use the Recalculate Player Demands and Recalculate Budgets buttons. Otherwise, your budget settings may not match your new financial settings.

When using a fixed budget, the Continue Draft screen will include player demands, as well as a running total of how much money you have spent towards your budget.

Running the Inaugural Draft
Advanced League Setup
Advanced League Setup is available in the New Custom Game option from the Start Screen. Upon first selecting New Custom Game a prompt will ask if you wish to enable Challenge Mode. After this prompt the League Creation Wizard will appear. The Advanced Setup mode is reached via the button on the bottom left. A check box beside the button gives the option to skip the Wizard and go directly to Advanced mode upon future Custom game creation.

When creating a game in Advanced Mode the Create New Game section will be on the left and (once a league is added) all the settings for the currently selected league will appear on the right.

Setting up a custom game is straightforward, but also very in depth. The basic process involves adding a new league and then stepping through each section of options from left to right. Once done, click on the Start Game button in the lower left.

Steps for Creating a Game in Advanced League Setup
# Add leagues via the Create Game section.
# For each league in your saved game, customize your League Settings.
# Select Start Game and Create your Manager Profile.
# Play ball!

Tips and Advice
* Before starting a game you may want to save the structure and settings as a Template. This allows for testing multiple configurations without having to re-enter information and game settings. It may take multiple game creation cycles and test sims to get everything just right. Templates can help save a lot of time.
* Templates created before game creation (Start Game) contain only settings and structure, whereas templates created after game creation will also contain players and therefore will always have the same pool of players each time the template is used. If you are running test sims you probably do not want to have the same pool of players (and names) once you begin playing your league.
* The initial player pool is one of the few things that cannot be changed once the game is created. Almost all settings can be adjusted later, but the initial pool of players can only be manually deleted and regenerated.
* If using a custom world database it must be selected before the first league is added to the game.

Towards the beginning it states that the "program will not be shown if all the pitchers pitches are 375 or over" and then towards the end it states "Once a pitch exceeds 375 current this program will be removed from your Development Lab Program List." I suspect it ought to say "Once all pitches exceed 375..."

"never been seen before"
The second part of "This gives you more say in the development of your players, something that has never been seen before in OOTP." isn't actually correct, unless I'm misunderstanding the meaning, in which case maybe it should be clarified. I don't remember what version it was, maybe OOTP4, 5, or 6, but we did once have the ability to tell the game what we wanted the players to focus on for a chance at improving it. The feature was, however, removed from the game not long after. And I don't remember exactly why it was, but my guess is people complained about something about it.

A lot of repeated words
In the lists there are a lot of repeated words and I think it would help if they were kept to a minimum. For example, in "This program is considered EASY - On successful or outstanding completion this program will improve", really the only word that really depends on the item is "easy" (maybe "successful" and "outstanding" do too?). I'm not sure what the best way to present it on wiki would be, but I'd maybe introduce the list with either headings or a note that says what comes first is the program name, then its difficulty and lastly its result. The Player Development Lab (Also known as Practice Facility in Historical Games). provides the ability to influence the development of a limited selection of players. Development programs can be assigned during the off-season with each program targeting a specific set of player skills

Find out more information about the lab here, in the developer's guide to the program. (Also check out Player Development Sliders)

Development Lab Settings
Development Lab settings can be found under Game > Game Settings > Players & Teams in the Player Development Settings section.

* Disable Player Development Lab - Disables the Development Lab.
* Development Lab Size - Changes the number of player slots available, ranging from 1 to 20. By default 8 players can be assigned.

* Display Lab Specific Ratings Changes in Completion Email - Enables the display of rating changes in the program completion emails. Examples of the information sent in the emails:

The rating changes displayed in the completion emails depend on the rating scale in use.

Using the Development Lab
The Development Lab can be found from the Team Menu under Player Development.

The development lab facility is open during the offseason and preseason, and includes weight rooms, batting cages, bullpens, training equipment, and more. While this facility is open you can send players here, where they will follow a training program designed to improve a specific part of their game.

Programs take different amounts of time to complete. There are short programs (4 to 5 weeks) and long programs (4 to 5 months).

The time allotted to the short and long program lengths will adjust to the amount of time between seasons (the offseason). A short schedule with more offseason time will increase program lengths (ex: 5 to 6 weeks or 5 to 6 months) and a long season with a shorter offseason will decrease program lengths. A player should be able to complete "3 short programs" or "1 long program and 1 short program" in an offseason.

Assigning a Player to a Development Program
To assign a player to a development program simply drag a player from the left side to the right side and select the program for the player. The available programs are listed below.

Notes

* Some programs may not always be available to all players. Ex: a player may already be at the maximum level and cannot improve further
* Injured players may not be able to participate in development programs.

List of Development Programs
Development programs are split between common programs, pitcher specific programs, and batter specific programs. Programs have varying difficulty levels (Easy, Medium, Hard, and Very Hard). The difficulty impacts program length and likelihood of success.

Common Programs:
Development Outcomes
Programs have four possible outcomes: Poor, No Improvement, Successful, and Outstanding.

* Poor results may produce a negative outcome (decrease in ratings) in some, but not all programs.
* No Improvement produces no change in rating(s)
* Successful results produce an increase in rating(s)
* Outstanding results produce an increase in potential rating(s) in addition to current rating(s) and can sometimes produce a bonus improvement.

On program completion the results for each player will be emailed to the general manager. These results may not be directly visible or obvious when viewing player ratings or scouting reports. Changes occur to internal ratings (available in the player editor). Depending on the rating scale in use they may not always result in a change to the displayed ratings. The scouting system will also impact the visibility of a ratings change.

Tips and Tricks
Having coaches with good development traits, players with positive personalities and good morale could possibly give a slight bonus at getting better outcomes. Making sure your development budget has enough money can also help with the development lab outcome.

Ktulu: Replaced outdated information (names.txt etc) with the names.xml format

All player names in OOTP can be found in the names.xml file located in the /data/database folder.

<N nid="121664">

<EN>Markus</EN>

<ES>Markus</ES>
<NL>
<L lid="6" dist="1"/>

<L lid="7" dist="1"/>

<L lid="10" dist="6"/>

<L lid="11" dist="1"/>

<L lid="12" dist="1"/>

<L lid="32" dist="1"/>

<L lid="39" dist="1"/>

</NL>

</N>

New Game
Option 1: Overwrite the names.xml file in the /data/database folder (make a backup of the original file)

Old Information

<s>So, you want to create a Finnish league, but don't want players named "Zack Maloney"? Names are one of the most frequently customized aspects of OOTP, and it's a pretty easy process, too. OOTP comes with an extensive database of first and last names of many different ethnicities, with over 18,000 first names, and over 80,000 last names. There are also over 1,000 player nicknames.</s>

<s>OOTP's name database consists of three text files: first_names.txt, names.txt and nick_names.txt. These are located in the datadatabase directory in your OOTP installation directory. These name files are used to generate all player and personnel names in the game.</s>

<s>All three names files are comma-separated text files. If you're not familiar with those, see thisscreenabout comma-separated files. In particular, if you're looking to edit the names.txt file with Microsoft Excel, see this section of the page.</s>

<s>The names database is used for all leagues in a given saved game. There is no way, for example, to use one set of names for "League A" in your saved game, and a different set for "League B" in your saved game.</s>

<s>By default, the name files are used only upon the creation of a new saved game. At that time, all the names in the name files are converted into a file called "names.dat" that is stored in the saved game directory. OOTP uses names.dat to generate names any time new players or personnel are created. However, if you wish to change the names database for an existing saved game, you can modify the names files, and then re-import them into your saved game using the Re-Import Name and Ethnicity Database option on the Global Setup page.</s>

<s>New players are created at the start of a game, and during any subsequent first-year player drafts. In leagues that do not have first-year player drafts, some free agents are created annually. New personnel are created at the start of the game, and occasionally thereafter to replace those who have retired.</s>

World

* Ethnicities
* Continents
** Nations
*** Nation
**** State
***** Cities
* Regions

* id: unique ID number
* name: The name of the country
* name/short_korean: Used for the Korean localization
* pop: the population of the country
* etid: the primary ethinicity of the country. (Only used as a fallback if the ethnicities aren't set at a lower level?)
* capid: the id number of the country's capital city
* gender: ?
* bbqual: the baseball quality of the nation on a scale of 1-5. see Baseball Quality
* abbr & abbr_korean: Country abbreviation. This abbreviation is used to load the Nation Flag of the same name. ex: CAN = can.png
* dem & dem_korean: used by OOTP's text engine
* time_zone: the primary time zone if not set at a lower level (state or city)

Within each <Nation> are two primary sections and an optional third.

<SECOND_NATIONS>
This section is optional and is used in the player selection process for international tournaments?.

<ETHN_PCTS>
This is where the distribution of ethnicities is set. Again using Canada as an example:

<code><ETHN_PCTS></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="8" pct="5" /></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="32" pct="95" /></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="39" pct="5" /></code>

<code></ETHN_PCTS></code>

* etid: the ethnicity ID as defined in the <ETHNICITIES> section
* pct: the relative usage of the ethnicity. Note: while most entries are defined as an even share of 100% this is not a requirement.

In this example the vast majority of players will use ethinicity # 32 "Canadian", while a smaller percentage will use #8 "French" and #39 "U.S. (African-American)"

<STATES>
This section is where each State/Province is defined.

<code><STATE id="678" name="Ontario" name_korean="온타리오" pop="13448494" abbr="ON" abbr_korean="ON" time_zone="-5" observes_dst="1"></code>

* id: unique ID number
* name: state/province name
* pop: population
* abbr: abbreviation
* time_zone: time zone. Used if time zone is not set at the City level
* observes_dst: sets whether day light savings time is observed. 1 = "Yes" 0 = "No". Used if time zone is not set at the City level

<CITIES>
This section is where each city is defined

<code><CITY id="57981" name="Ottawa" name_korean="오타와" pop="812129" lat="45.42000" long="-75.71000" abbr="OTT" abbr_korean="OTT" /></code>

* id: unique ID number
* name/name_korean: City name/Korean localization
* pop: city population

<REGIONS>

<code>       <REGION_NATIONS></code>

<code>       <REGION_NATION id="36" /></code>

<code>       <REGION_NATION id="124" /></code>

<code>       <REGION_NATION id="206" /></code>

<code>       </REGION_NATIONS></code>

<code>   </REGION></code>

* id: unique Region ID

" pop="
812129
" lat="
45.42
" long="
-75.71
"abbr="
OTT

Example:

<NATION id="124" name="Mexico" name_korean="멕시코" short_korean="멕시코" pop="107550697" etid="1" capid="49935" gender="0" bbqual="5" abbr="MEX" abbr_korean="MEX" dem="Mexican" dem_korean="멕시코인" time_zone="-7" observes_dst="1">

* <s>The nations.txt File</s>
* <s>The cities.txt File</s>
* <s>Putting Nations and Cities Together</s>
* <s>Hands-on: Nations</s>
* <s>Hands-on: Cities</s>

Ktulu: Added information on the world_default.xml. Needs to be organized better, but it's a better placeholder than the out of date cities.txt information.

World

* Ethnicities
* Continents
** Nations
*** Nation
**** State
***** Cities
* Regions

* id: unique ID number
* name: The name of the country
* name/short_korean: Used for the Korean localization
* pop: the population of the country
* etid: the primary ethinicity of the country. (Only used as a fallback if the ethnicities aren't set at a lower level?)
* capid: the id number of the country's capital city
* gender: ?
* bbqual: the baseball quality of the nation on a scale of 1-5. see Baseball Quality
* abbr & abbr_korean: Country abbreviation. This abbreviation is used to load the Nation Flag of the same name. ex: CAN = can.png
* dem & dem_korean: used by OOTP's text engine
* time_zone: the primary time zone if not set at a lower level (state or city)

Within each <Nation> are two primary sections and an optional third.

<SECOND_NATIONS>
This section is optional and is used in the player selection process for international tournaments?.

<ETHN_PCTS>
This is where the distribution of ethnicities is set. Again using Canada as an example:

<code><ETHN_PCTS></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="8" pct="5" /></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="32" pct="95" /></code>

<code>           <ETHN_PCT etid="39" pct="5" /></code>

<code></ETHN_PCTS></code>

* etid: the ethnicity ID as defined in the <ETHNICITIES> section
* pct: the relative usage of the ethnicity. Note: while most entries are defined as an even share of 100% this is not a requirement.

In this example the vast majority of players will use ethinicity # 32 "Canadian", while a smaller percentage will use #8 "French" and #39 "U.S. (African-American)"

<STATES>
This section is where each State/Province is defined.

<code><STATE id="678" name="Ontario" name_korean="온타리오" pop="13448494" abbr="ON" abbr_korean="ON" time_zone="-5" observes_dst="1"></code>

* id: unique ID number
* name: state/province name
* pop: population
* abbr: abbreviation
* time_zone: time zone. Used if time zone is not set at the City level
* observes_dst: sets whether day light savings time is observed. 1 = "Yes" 0 = "No". Used if time zone is not set at the City level

<CITIES>
This section is where each city is defined

<code><CITY id="57981" name="Ottawa" name_korean="오타와" pop="812129" lat="45.42000" long="-75.71000" abbr="OTT" abbr_korean="OTT" /></code>

* id: unique ID number
* name/name_korean: City name/Korean localization
* pop: city population

<REGIONS>

<code>       <REGION_NATIONS></code>

<code>       <REGION_NATION id="36" /></code>

<code>       <REGION_NATION id="124" /></code>

<code>       <REGION_NATION id="206" /></code>

<code>       </REGION_NATIONS></code>

<code>   </REGION></code>

* id: unique Region ID
* sort_order: Used to determine order in the selection menu (Clarification Needed)
* name: Name to describe the region.

In the above example the Nation ids of Canada, Mexico and the USA are used.

Advanced Editing Tips
Manually editing the xml file can be very tedious, but it can be made easier by first manipulatin8g the data in a spreadsheet and then inserting that data back into the xml. One method is to insert the xml tags between the finished columns of data:

Using a Custom File for a New Game
OOTP provides a method to use custom files without the need to overwrite the default files in the database folder.

Nation Flags
OOTP does not support a custom path for Nation Flags. All nation flags must be placed in the data/database/nation_flags folder and the file name must match the country abbreviation in the world_default.xml file.

Example:

<NATION id="124" name="Mexico" name_korean="멕시코" short_korean="멕시코" pop="107550697" etid="1" capid="49935" gender="0" bbqual="5" abbr="MEX" abbr_korean="MEX" dem="Mexican" dem_korean="멕시코인" time_zone="-7" observes_dst="1">

* <s>The nations.txt File</s>
* <s>The cities.txt File</s>
* <s>Putting Nations and Cities Together</s>
* <s>Hands-on: Nations</s>
* <s>Hands-on: Cities</s>
* <s>Editing Nation Flags</s>
